XLOOKUP vs. VLOOKUP

Updated: Jun 28, 2023

XLOOKUP is considered to be an improvement over VLOOKUP because it has several additional capabilities that VLOOKUP does not have.

Here are six reasons why XLOOKUP is considered to be better than VLOOKUP:

  • XLOOKUP allows you to specify a default value to return if the lookup value is not found in the lookup array. VLOOKUP returns an #N/A error if the lookup value is not found, which can be difficult to handle.

  • XLOOKUP allows you to search for the lookup value using different match modes, such as exact match, closest match, and wildcard match. VLOOKUP only allows for exact match or approximate match.

  • XLOOKUP allows you to specify a return value of "NA" if the lookup value is not found in the lookup array, rather than returning an error.

Excel Xlookup and Vlookup
  • XLOOKUP allows you to specify a return array that is a different size and shape than the lookup array. With VLOOKUP, the return array must be the same size and shape as the lookup array.

  • XLOOKUP allows you to search for the lookup value in a range of cells, rather than just a single column. This makes it more flexible and allows you to perform more advanced lookups.

  • The XLOOKUP not only improves the VLOOKUP functionality but also replaces the HLOOKUP.

Overall, XLOOKUP is a more flexible and powerful function than VLOOKUP, and is generally considered to be a better choice for most lookup scenarios in Excel.
